An engineering leader that doubles as a corn and soybean farmer. A rising architect who spins the pottery wheel in her free time, including all of the vases at her wedding. A mass timber director who retrofitted his 1920s Craftsman-style house in Seattle, Wash.

These AEC professionals and 37 of their rockstar peers are recognized for their career achievements, passion for the AEC profession, involvement with AEC industry organizations, and service to their communities. This is the Building Design+Construction 40 Under 40 class of 2024.

“Communication is key. There is a quote that I love: ‘Good news is good news, bad news is good news, no news is bad news.’ I do not necessarily agree (and clients rarely do!) that bad news is good news, but at a concept level the message is important. I have learned that it is critical to professional growth to ask questions, be prompt and responsive, and always clearly communicate.”

After I finished presenting my project, the reviewer simply said, ‘Just trust yourself.’ That simple statement taught me the value of self-reliance and confidence in my own abilities. In our challenging and complex work, it’s crucial to be in your own corner. Even failure should be embraced as an opportunity to learn and grow. Trusting yourself is the first step toward that growth and learning.”

“My single biggest professional achievement so far is being the first in my immediate family to graduate from a post-graduate degree program. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR SINGLE BIGGEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR?
“Most people don’t think of a moment of failure when thinking of a professional achievement, but I’d say failing my first ARE exam has been my biggest professional achievement to date. Failing that test was the wakeup call I needed to remind me that this profession is difficult and it takes discipline, hard work, and dedication in the pursuit of progress. It lit the fire that led to my architectural licensure.”

You might not realize how important that latter skill is right this moment, but I’ve been doing this for 30 years and I’ve never seen anyone solve problems and explain the solutions like you do.”

Melissa takes her leadership cues from her great grandmother, a suffragette who ran a real estate business in the 1910s. She was also the first woman in Atlantic City, N.J., to get a driver’s license, and she used her car to lead the Red Cross Motor Corps during World War I. The great grandmother was also an aviatrix.

Seeing The Children’s Hospital of Richmond’s inpatient tower and 280-ft connector bridge come to life on what is a very tight urban site. This was the first project on which Mellisa was Engineer of Record. She designed the foundation to support any of 17 options, which gave the team an additional eight months to find the best location for the bridge.

Sometimes it’s important to reassess your idea of success to determine if what you’re chasing is perfection. “I was working on a very ambitious pilot project when JP Morgan Vice President and Senior Business Consultant, Branden Morris pointed out that I might be halting my progress by trying to reach too many goals at one time. He reminded me that completion is the biggest win. Even if the goals you started with are modified along the way.”

Founding Studio Volcy, a multidisciplinary studio promoting culture and change in Pittsburgh’s architectural landscape. “Since the company’s inception in 2019, with the support of our project partners, we’ve raisedover $3.5 million in grant funding for our flagship mixed-use affordable housing project, RHYTHM Square.”
